About WEB files

The .web file extension is notorious for being heavily fragmented across completely unrelated applications. Most frequently, it functions as a WebM video container (based on the MKV format) developed by the Google WebM Project, or as an Internet URL shortcut file formatted in JSON by the Microsoft Edge browser. However, it is also actively used as a proprietary website design project file for Xara Web Designer, firmware updates for TOTOLINK routers, or even IBM FileNet document images.

Because multiple applications claim the .web extension, the biggest disadvantage is the total lack of native operating system recognition. Windows or macOS will consistently fail to open it without user intervention. Proprietary variants, like Xara Web Designer projects, are closed formats that trap your website layouts in a specific ecosystem, requiring you to export to standard HTML or CSS manually from within the original software. For video or image-based .web files, web browsers may support them, but standard desktop editors often reject the non-standard file extension.

Converting a .web file depends entirely on its true internal structure. Video variants should be converted to MP4 for broad device compatibility. Image variants (like renamed WEBP or JPG files) are best converted to standard PNG or JPG. Xara projects cannot be converted directly by third-party tools; you must use the original software to export the design.

Because of this extreme file extension overlap, standard online converters usually fail - they rely purely on the extension rather than reading the file header. This file format is heavily fragmented and notoriously difficult to open or convert blindly. Emphasizing this, often only the original software can properly read or export the specialized data (like router firmware or Xero accounting backups). We can still identify the file format, inspect the file, and show text or internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format (such as an MKV, RIFF, or ZIP container), viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your WEB file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted WEBP, HTML, JPG, ZIP, WEBLOC, TORRENT, OGG, MP5 and MEDIA files.

The WEB Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our WEB converter.
