The .mp5 file extension is primarily used for Security camera snapshot images (often from V380 IP security cameras) and encrypted dashcam video files produced by various Chinese DVR manufacturers. Less commonly, it acts as a renamed MP4 video container, a JPG (JFIF) image file, or even a CAD reinforcement mesh data file for Nemetschek Allplan.
Users usually encounter .mp5 files when exporting surveillance footage from budget security cameras or dashcams. The primary disadvantage of this format is its proprietary and closed nature. Often, these files are completely unplayable in standard media players like VLC Media Player or web browsers. They frequently require poorly translated, buggy, or unsafe proprietary software to open. If the file is an encrypted dashcam video, it is intentionally locked down to prevent tampering, making it incredibly frustrating to share with insurance companies or police.
