Convert VSQ to another file type
To convert VSQ projects to another format, you need Vocaloid2 or other Audio software.
Convert a file to VSQ
To convert other file formats to the "Vocal Synthesizer Project" file type, you need software like Vocaloid2 or a similar tool.
About VSQ files
The .VSQ file is a proprietary project format created by Yamaha for its Vocaloid2 singing synthesis software. It stores the exact sequence of musical notes, lyrics, phonemes, and control parameters (such as pitch bend, dynamics, and vibrato) used to generate an artificial vocal track.
This format is strictly bound to the Vocaloid ecosystem. It does not contain actual audio data; rather, it holds the instructions for the Vocaloid engine to synthesize a voice. To open it natively, you need legacy Vocaloid2 software or a newer version capable of backward compatibility.
The main disadvantage of the .VSQ format is its rigid proprietary lock-in. You cannot play a .VSQ file in standard media players. Furthermore, sharing the raw sequence with producers using different DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations) is impossible without conversion. The format relies entirely on specific, paid voicebanks installed locally; if a collaborator lacks the exact singer library, the file will not play correctly.
To break out of the Vocaloid ecosystem, conversion is mandatory. For cross-DAW editing, convert to standard MIDI to retain basic note and velocity data, keeping in mind that Vocaloid-specific phonetic parameters will be lost. If you are migrating to newer Vocaloid engines, converting to VSQX is ideal. For use in free synthesizer alternatives like UTAU, convert to UST. The VSQ Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VSQ converter.
