About VIV files
The .VIV extension typically refers to a proprietary Game Data Archive used extensively by Electronic Arts (EA) and Westwood Studios for classic titles like Need for Speed, FIFA, and NBA Live. These containers bundle thousands of game assets - including WAV audio, BMP textures, and video cinematics - into a single file to optimize loading times. The primary challenge for users is that .VIV archives are hermetically sealed; you cannot view the textures or listen to the soundtrack without specialized extraction tools. Attempting to open them in a standard text editor produces illegible binary data, and modern operating systems do not recognize the format natively.
For gamers, modders, and archivists, the goal is often to extract these assets for editing or preservation. Converting a .VIV archive to a standard ZIP file or extracting its contents allows you to access the raw media. Audio files inside often use proprietary codecs (like ASF/PTC) that require further conversion to MP3 or WAV for playback.
Alternatively, a .VIV file may be an obsolete VivoActive video file, a streaming format from the late 1990s developed by Vivo Software (later acquired by RealNetworks). These files use highly compressed, outdated codecs that modern browsers and media players like QuickTime generally reject. To make these videos viewable on smartphones or web pages, they must be converted to H.264 MP4 or WebM formats. Convert.guru simplifies this process, allowing you to identify the specific type of .VIV file you have and convert it to a usable format immediately.

The VIV Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VIV converter.
