About UUE files
A .UUE file is a Unix-to-Unix Encoded file, a legacy format used to convert binary data (like images or programs) into ASCII text for safe transmission over older text-only protocols like email or Usenet. While effective in the early internet era, this format is now largely obsolete and is a common issue for modern users.
Because .UUE files are technically just blocks of text characters, opening them in a standard text editor reveals unintelligible gibberish rather than the actual content. They cannot be viewed directly by media players or document readers, and the encoding process increases the file size by approximately 35% compared to the original binary. To access the enclosed data - whether it is a JPG, DOCX, or EXE - you typically need specialized archival software like 7-Zip or WinRAR to "decode" it.
For easier access and sharing, we recommend converting .UUE files to standard archive formats like ZIP or 7Z.
Convert.Guru analyzes your UUE file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert UUE file to BASE64, HEX, BIN, ENC, CRYPT, AES, DES, RSA, PGP, GPG, ASC or KEY, you can use 7-Zip or similar software from the "Binary-to-Text Encoding" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert CER, BIN, PEM, DER, KEY, P7S, PFX, ENC, P12, BASE64, P7B or HEX files to UUE, try 7-Zip or another comparable tool in the "Binary-to-Text Encoding" category.
The UUE Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our UUE converter.
