About USDC files

The .USDC file is a binary Universal Scene Description format created by Pixar Animation Studios to store massive, complex 3D scenes. Unlike the human-readable .USDA text format, .USDC files are encoded in a binary "crate" system to maximize read speeds and minimize memory usage when loading thousands of 3D assets into memory.

These files are primarily used in high-end visual effects pipelines and game engines like Unreal Engine, Autodesk Maya, and Blender. You can learn more about the architecture on the Universal Scene Description Wikipedia page.

Working with .USDC files presents several disadvantages. The format is incredibly complex and completely unreadable without specialized software or USD libraries. Because USD files often act as compositional files that reference dozens of other files (textures, geometries, rigs), a single .USDC file might appear "empty" or broken if the referenced paths are missing. It is not supported by standard web browsers.

If you need to share a .USDC file for web viewing or augmented reality (AR), you must convert it to a USDZ (an uncompressed zip archive of the scene and its textures) or a GLB. For broader compatibility with standard 3D modeling tools, converting to FBX or OBJ is recommended, though you will likely lose advanced USD features like non-destructive overrides and complex shading networks.

Standard online converters frequently fail to process .USDC files because parsing the binary crate format requires specific Pixar USD libraries, and resolving external asset references is impossible in a simple file upload. If our analysis detects a supported embedded geometry, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your USDC file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted USDZ, USD, WORDDOCUMENT, MAX and BTC files.
