About U files

A .U file is primarily a compiled script package used by the Unreal Engine (specifically versions 1 through 3) to store game logic, classes, and compiled bytecode. These files are the backbone of gameplay mechanics for classic titles like Unreal Tournament, Lineage II, and Killing Floor.

Because .U files are binary and proprietary, they present significant hurdles for modders and developers: they cannot be opened in standard text editors, are strictly version-locked to specific game builds, and require decompilation to be human-readable. Users often encounter these files when attempting to mod games or analyze game scripts. To make the content usable, the standard workflow involves converting the compiled code back into editable UC (UnrealScript) text files using decompilers like UE Explorer, or extracting embedded assets (like textures or sounds) to standard formats such as PNG, WAV, or OBJ.

*Note: In rare enterprise contexts, a .U file may be a user data backup for ZKTeco biometric devices, which requires proprietary software to parse into XLS or CSV formats.*

The U Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our U converter.
