About BSM files
The .BSM format is a multi-purpose extension with highly specific, disconnected use cases. Its most common application is as a BioShock Map file, which stores 3D level data, static meshes, textures, and object placements for the game BioShock, running on a heavily modified Unreal Engine. Another major use is the Basic Security Module (BSM) binary audit log file found in macOS and Sun Solaris, which records low-level system security events. It is also used as Boundary Scan Models in IEEE 1149.1 JTAG testing, and as database files for brewing recipes in BeerSmith. The main disadvantage of .BSM files is their proprietary and highly contextual nature. BioShock maps are compiled exclusively for the game engine and cannot be natively imported into standard 3D software like Blender without reverse-engineering mod tools. Similarly, BSM audit logs are raw binary files that require specific command-line utilities like praudit or ausearch to read; they are not human-readable out of the box and restrict cross-platform analysis. Converting a .BSM file depends entirely on its type. Game maps might theoretically be unpacked to extract 3D assets to OBJ or FBX, but full structural conversion is unsupported. Audit logs are typically processed into plain text TXT, CSV, or XML for database ingestion. BeerSmith files are best exported to the standardized BeerXML format. This file format is difficult to open or convert because it usually lacks a standardized public schema. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your BSM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The BSM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BSM converter.
