About TXD files
The .TXD file is a RenderWare Texture Dictionary used extensively in classic 3D games, most famously the Grand Theft Auto series. It acts as a specialized container, holding multiple texture images that wrap around 3D vehicle, character, and map models (usually stored as DFF files). Some modern variations of the .TXD file even function as simple ZIP archives holding flat game textures.
To open or edit these files locally, game modders historically rely on community-built tools like TXD Workshop or MagicTXD.
The primary disadvantage of the .TXD format is its proprietary, legacy nature. It offers zero native compatibility with modern operating systems, web browsers, or standard image editors like Adobe Photoshop. The internal textures are often stored using lossy DXT1, DXT3, or DXT5 compression, which degrades quality to save VRAM. If you are not actively modding a vintage game, the file is essentially a locked black box.
To view or edit the textures, you must extract or convert the .TXD file. For editing and preserving alpha channel transparency, convert the contents to PNG or BMP. For web sharing or archiving raw texture rips, convert to ZIP or JPG. Drag and drop your file here to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing legacy software.

The TXD Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our TXD converter.
