About TXD files

A .TXD file is a RenderWare Texture Dictionary, primarily serving as a container for raster graphics used to skin 3D models in classic Rockstar Games titles like Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Vice City. These files act as libraries, often holding multiple textures and their alpha channels in a single compressed archive. The main disadvantage of the .TXD format is its proprietary nature; it is strictly tied to the RenderWare engine and cannot be opened by standard image viewers like Microsoft Photos or editors like Adobe Photoshop without specialized plugins. Modders and game designers often have trouble when trying to view or edit these assets, as they require extraction tools to access the underlying images. For editing textures, users should convert the internal assets to PNG or TGA formats, which preserve transparency and quality. For quick viewing or sharing, converting extracted textures to JPG is suitable, though repacking them back into a .TXD is required for use in-game.

The TXD Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our TXD converter.
