The .TRF file extension is notoriously fragmented, serving as a container for several completely unrelated proprietary data formats. Most commonly, it is a GPS tour or route file used by Tyre To Travel and TomTom MyDrive Connect. Internally, these navigation files are often just ZIP archives containing waypoint data. Alternatively, .TRF acts as an Automotive test trace report generated by TraceTronic ECU-TEST (stored as an SQL database), an audio measurement trace file for Rational Acoustics Smaart software, or a Chess tournament report file utilized by ChessBase.
Because the .TRF extension is shared across highly niche, proprietary systems, opening it is frustrating. A TomTom GPS file cannot be read by chess databases or audio analysis software. The format is generally opaque, locks your data into specific ecosystems, and requires expensive licenses to view natively (such as Smaart or ECU-TEST). Standard text editors and web browsers will fail to open these files directly.
To make your data universally usable, conversion is the most practical workaround. For GPS routing data, convert .TRF to GPX or KML for seamless import into Google Earth, Garmin, or mobile navigation apps. For automotive trace logs and chess reports, convert to CSV, XLSX, or PGN to analyze the raw data in Excel or standard database tools. For archiving test results, converting to PDF is best.
