About MVI files
The .MVI file is a highly fragmented video format most commonly used as a boot video for Dreambox satellite receivers or as a raw container for H.264/MPEG-4 AVC video streams. Because multiple unrelated developers use the .MVI extension, it causes severe compatibility issues. Legacy systems also use this extension for Sony PlayStation 2 movie files, AutoCAD Movie Command Files, and old Motion Pixels videos by Sirius Publishing. The primary disadvantage of the .MVI format is its lack of standardized headers. Native operating systems like Windows and macOS do not recognize it. You cannot upload an .MVI file to YouTube, send it via WhatsApp, or play it natively in a web browser. Depending on its exact origin, you might need a specialized tool like TMPGEnc or hardware like a satellite box just to read the file. While VLC media player can sometimes force playback by scanning the raw H.264 data, editing or sharing the file requires a conversion workaround. For web use and mobile sharing, convert to .MP4.
