About SCR files
The .SCR file extension serves multiple, completely unrelated purposes. Primarily, it is a Windows Screensaver file. Under the hood, these are standard Windows Executable (PE/EXE) files used by Microsoft Windows to display animations when the computer is idle. Another common use is for DJI Drone video thumbnails, where the drone saves low-resolution image caches as .SCR files alongside the main video. Finally, it can act as a game graphics configuration script for engines like the Techland Chrome Engine or games like Crysis. The biggest disadvantage of .SCR screensaver files is their severe security risk. Because they are executable files, malware frequently disguises itself as an .SCR file to bypass email filters. Furthermore, modern operating systems no longer rely on screensavers to prevent CRT monitor burn-in, making the format largely obsolete. For drone users, DJI's use of the .SCR extension is frustrating because standard image viewers cannot open them without manual renaming.
