Extract text from TGM files
To convert your TGM file to another format, you need Age of Empires Online or other Game software.
To convert other file formats to the "Map Data File" file type, you need software like Age of Empires Online or a similar tool.
The .tgm extension acts as a container for several unrelated proprietary formats, most notably game map data for titles like Age of Empires Online, compressed save states for RPGs like The Bard's Tale IV, and industrial tag databases for Kivnon automated guided vehicles.
Because these files are often binary-encoded or compressed (sometimes using GZIP), users frequently encounter friction when trying to open them in standard text editors, resulting in unreadable gibberish. The primary need for conversion arises when modders attempt to parse level geometry or game logic, or when industrial engineers need to migrate AGV routing data from the proprietary Kivnon Tag Manager to a standard format.
For game files, the best workflow is often to check for compression (renaming to GZ may allow extraction) or convert the parsed data to JSON or XML for editing. For industrial Kivnon files, which may contain SQL structures, converting to CSV or plain SQL text files is ideal for data migration and archiving.
