About TGM files

The .TGM file extension is heavily fragmented and associated with several distinct proprietary formats. Most commonly, it serves as a Game Map Data File or an AGV Tag Database. In the gaming industry, titles like Age of Empires Online and The Bard's Tale IV use .TGM files to store complex map assets, save states, and spatial environment data. Some of these files rely on an underlying Unreal engine architecture, while others are simply compressed GZIP archives. In the industrial sector, Kivnon uses .TGM files as SQL-based tag databases for Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs). Additionally, the ERTMS Eurobalise railway system uses the extension for encoded train control telegrams.

The primary disadvantage of .TGM files is their highly specialized, undocumented nature. They are strictly bound to their parent software and cannot be natively previewed in web browsers, operating systems, or standard text editors. Attempting to manually edit a game map or an industrial tag database usually corrupts the binary structure. Furthermore, because one extension is shared by four completely unrelated technologies, users face immense confusion when trying to access their data.

To safely view or modify these files, you generally must use the original game engine, the Kivnon Tag Manager, or the Eurobalise Compiler. Since direct conversion to standard documents is usually impossible, the best pragmatic target formats involve data extraction. Depending on the exact variant, you might be able to extract the internal data into TXT, SQL, or ZIP formats.

This file format is notoriously difficult to open or convert because standard converters blindly rely on file extensions and fail when encountering overlapping proprietary formats. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible on convert.guru. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format like SQL or GZIP, viewing or data extraction may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your TGM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted AMC, JPEG, KDT, SBP and SKR files.

The TGM Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our TGM converter.
