About TFX files

Users typically encounter the .tfx extension in two distinct, highly technical environments, creating significant compatibility confusion. The most common variation is a Game Engine Shader file, historically associated with the Criterion RenderWare engine or older versions of CryEngine. These files contain compiled visual effects definitions or texture rendering instructions. The friction here is high: they are often proprietary binary files optimized for specific consoles (like PS2/Xbox era) and cannot be opened by standard image editors like Photoshop.

A second, modern variation is the Optical Material Data file used by Essential Macleod software. These are XML-based text files storing refractive index and extinction coefficient data for thin-film design. Users often need to convert these to CSV or JSON to analyze the material properties in Excel or Python without requiring a specialized optical engineering license. For game assets, converting to TXT or Hex Dump is the only way to inspect the code structure for modding or archival purposes.

Convert.Guru analyzes your TFX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted TXL, TXF, HPK, PDF, TSX, QRP, DWG, TXT, JPG and SMD files.

The TFX Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our TFX converter.
