An .HPK file is predominantly a compressed game data archive. It is most commonly used by Haemimont Games for titles like Surviving Mars and the Tropico series, as well as by the Valve GoldSrc engine for games like Half-Life. In enterprise environments, it is also seen as a Hot-Deployable Project package for Liferay Portal, and historically as an HPack compressed archive.
Users typically want to convert or unpack these files to extract internal assets like 3D models, textures, or audio clips. The main disadvantage of the .HPK format is its heavily proprietary nature. Game engines use closed-source, custom compression algorithms, meaning standard archive tools cannot open them.
