The .TXF file extension primarily represents a Tax Exchange Format file. It is used to transfer financial and tax data, such as income, capital gains, and stock transactions, directly from financial institutions into tax preparation software. Users typically open or import .TXF files using TurboTax by Intuit, or personal finance software like Quicken. A smaller number of .TXF files are NVR/DVR security video recordings, label design files for cablabel S3, or game texture dictionaries for titles like Grand Theft Auto V.
The main disadvantage of the .TXF tax format is that it is difficult for humans to read. It requires a paid subscription or specific desktop software to parse the transactions properly. Users who lack this software often cannot view their own financial data. You will usually want to convert a .TXF file to a CSV or XLSX spreadsheet to view the data in Microsoft Excel, or a PDF to print the records. Keep in mind that converting to CSV flattens the data structure, meaning specific tax codes used by TurboTax may lose their automated context.
