About TCX files
The .TCX (Training Center XML) format is a data file used primarily to exchange fitness and workout metrics. Originally developed for the discontinued Garmin Training Center software, it remains a standard export option for platforms like Garmin Connect and Strava. The format stores GPS coordinates alongside detailed biometric data such as heart rate, cadence, and calories burned. While highly detailed, the .TCX format presents several real-world disadvantages. Because it relies on verbose XML text formatting, the files are unnecessarily large and consume excessive storage compared to modern binary alternatives like FIT. Furthermore, it is heavily tailored to the fitness niche and is rarely supported by general GIS tools, meaning users cannot simply open a .TCX file in a standard map viewer. To overcome these limitations, you will often need to convert the file. For universal map and route compatibility, convert to GPX. For 3D geographical visualization in Google Earth, convert to KML.
