About T files

The .t file extension is a multi-purpose identifier that poses a unique challenge because it is used by completely unrelated systems. Most commonly (16%), these files are Android Image Thumbnails created by the Google Android operating system. In this context, the file is actually a standard JPG image that has been renamed or cached with a .t extension to serve as a preview icon in gallery apps. Users frequently encounter these when backing up phone data, only to find they cannot view their photos because the computer does not recognize the extension.

Alternatively, a .t file may be a Turing Source Code file. Developed by Holt Software, Turing is a Pascal-like programming language used in education. These files contain plain text source code. Other technical uses include Valgrind memory trace files, Xiaomi firmware archives (typically GZIP), or Perl test scripts. The primary disadvantage of the .t format is this ambiguity; without the correct software, the operating system cannot determine if the file is an image, a document, or a script.

The T Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our T converter.
