About BRUSH files
A .brush file is primarily a digital tool preset used by Procreate, the dominant raster graphics editor for iPad. These files function as containers - structurally identical to ZIP archives - that bundle the essential components of a digital brush: the Shape source (the brush tip footprint), the Grain source (the texture or pattern), and a plist file defining dynamics like pressure sensitivity and scatter.
The frustrating part for .brush files is their exclusivity to the Apple/iOS ecosystem. Designers often download brush packs on a Windows PC or Android device but find them unusable without an iPad. Furthermore, users cannot preview the brush stroke or texture without loading it into the Procreate app. Since Adobe Photoshop uses the ABR format, .brush files are not natively cross-compatible, locking valuable assets into a specific platform.
Conversion Strategies:
- For Extraction (Asset Recovery): Convert .brush to ZIP. Since the file is internally an archive, this allows you to unzip it and recover the internal PNG textures (Shape and Grain) for use in other software.
- For Cross-Platform Design: Once extracted, the PNG assets can be imported into Affinity Designer or Krita to manually recreate the brush behavior.
- For Archiving/Viewing: Convert the internal metadata to PDF or TXT to preserve the settings values if you are a developer or brush creator analyzing parameters.
*Note: A small percentage of .brush files may relate to the game Battle Brothers, serving as sprite definition files, or legacy Xerox doodle images.*
Convert.Guru analyzes your BRUSH file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted BRUSHSET, ABR, SUT, ARCHIVE, ZIP, PNG, BRUSHCATEGORY, ZBP, PRBR, SWATCHES, DOWNLOADING, SLDDRT and BMP files.
The BRUSH Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BRUSH converter.
