Extract text from Simulation and save files (SSS)

The .SSS file extension is heavily fragmented. It does not represent a single standard. Instead, multiple independent software developers use this extension for entirely different purposes. The most common use is as a shared stash save file for the Project Diablo 2 mod of Diablo II. In this context, it stores in-game items shared across multiple characters.
Another major use case is in the medical field. Laerdal Medical SimMan and CAE Healthcare use .SSS files to store medical simulation session data. Interestingly, these files are often standard ZIP archives disguised with a different extension. The extension is also used by the Seaward Group PATGuard software for Portable Appliance Test (PAT) results, and by the National Stock Exchange (India) for digitally signed contract notes. In some rare cases, users find .SSS files that are actually Matroska (.MKV) video containers.
This fragmentation is a major disadvantage. Standard online converters fail because they cannot guess which variant of the .SSS file you have. If the file is a proprietary database or encrypted contract, only the original software can read or export it. For example, PATGuard test results require the original software to export data to CSV or PDF. Game saves usually require dedicated community-built save editors.
If your file is a medical simulation session, renaming the extension to ZIP often allows you to extract the contents. If it is a video, changing it to MKV makes it playable in VLC Media Player.
