About MA4 files

The .ma4 file is a proprietary molecule sequence data archive created by Vector NTI (originally developed by InforMax). Biologists and bioinformaticians used these files to store heavily annotated DNA, RNA, and protein sequences, along with cloning project metadata.

Because Vector NTI was officially discontinued by Thermo Fisher Scientific, the .ma4 format is now a legacy file type. The primary disadvantage of this format is its strict, proprietary nature. Users cannot open it in a standard text editor or web browser. Without an active, legacy installation of Vector NTI, accessing the underlying genetic sequence data is extremely difficult. Researchers often find themselves locked out of their own historical data due to expired licenses and incompatible modern operating systems.

To preserve this data, users need to convert .ma4 files to open bioinformatics standards. The best target formats are FASTA for raw sequence data, GB (GenBank) for preserving annotations, or XML. Converting to these formats ensures compatibility with modern sequence analysis tools like SnapGene or Benchling, though some proprietary visual styling from Vector NTI will be lost.

This file format is difficult to open or convert because the data is packaged in a closed, undocumented binary or database structure. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. Standard online converters fail to process it. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your MA4 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted M4A, MP3, WAV, MA3, SSS, MA1, MP4, TEXT and FLAC files.

FAQ

If you want to convert MA4 file to MP3, WAV, MP4, TEXT, FLAC, AAC, OGG, WMA, M4A, AIFF, OPUS or ALAC, you can use Vector NTI or similar software from the "Molecule Sequence Data Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert MIDI, AAC, TTA, AU, WV, DTS, MID, FLAC, RA, MP3, PCM or WAV files to MA4, try Vector NTI or another comparable tool in the "Molecule Sequence Data Storage" category.

The MA4 Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MA4 converter.
