About MA1 files
The .MA1 file extension is primarily associated with Median XL, a popular overhaul mod for the classic action RPG Diablo II. These files function as sequential character backups (e.g., .ma0, .ma1, .ma2) automatically generated by the mod's launcher or save management tools to prevent data loss.
The catch for users is that the game engine itself does not recognize or load .MA1 files directly; it strictly requires the D2S extension. If your main character file is corrupted, you possess the data in the .MA1 file but cannot access it without intervention. Additionally, because it is a proprietary binary save format, you cannot edit it in standard text editors like Notepad++.
For most users, the goal is restoration: changing the extension from .MA1 to D2S allows Diablo II to read the file again. In rare legacy contexts, this file may also be a MagPack compressed archive used by Incentive Software for 1990s era games, or a Monarch Audio file. For archiving or sharing character stats without the binary blob, converting the data to a parsed TXT or JSON format using specific save editors is the best approach.
Convert.Guru analyzes your MA1 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted SSS, MA3, MA4 and MA0 files.
The MA1 Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MA1 converter.
