About SPX files

The .SPX file extension is most commonly used for either a macOS System Profiler Report or a Speex Audio File.

When generated by macOS, an .SPX file is an XML document created by the Apple System Information tool. It contains a complete diagnostic snapshot of a Mac computer's hardware, network, and software environment. Because it is designed specifically for Apple support workflows, it is not formatted for easy reading on Windows or Linux devices without manual parsing of the raw XML code. To share system specs with non-Mac users, convert the .SPX file to PDF or TXT.

Alternatively, an .SPX file is an audio recording that uses the Speex voice codec stored within an Ogg container. Developed by the Xiph.Org Foundation, Speex was designed exclusively for compressing human speech at very low bitrates. The primary disadvantage of this format is obsolescence. Speex has been officially abandoned in favor of the Opus codec. Modern web browsers, smartphones, and native operating system media players will completely reject .SPX audio files. To play them, you must install third-party software like VLC media player or Audacity.

To restore accessibility to your audio recordings, you must convert them. For web compatibility and sharing, convert .SPX to MP3 or M4A. For archiving without further compression, convert to WAV. Drag and drop your file to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software.
