About ATX files
The .ATX file extension serves two distinct, incompatible purposes, often leading to confusion for users trying to open them.
1. Apple Texture Snapshot (Graphic Development)
Most frequently, this file is a texture snapshot generated by Xcode during iOS or macOS application development. These files capture the state of a GPU texture for debugging purposes.
- The Problem: These are proprietary, raw graphic dumps intended only for the Apple development ecosystem. They cannot be opened in standard image editors like Photoshop, viewed in web browsers, or sent to clients for review.
- The Solution: Convert these snapshots to PNG, JPG, or TIFF. This makes the visual data accessible for bug reports, design verification, and archiving without needing developer tools.
2. ATX Tax Return (Financial Data)
In the financial sector, an .ATX file is a US tax return created by ATX Tax Software (popular among professional preparers).
- The Problem: These files are often version-locked. You typically need the specific tax year version of the paid software to open them. If you discontinue your subscription, you lose access to your historical tax data.
- The Solution: For long-term archiving, convert the return to PDF/A. If the file is actually a compressed container (which some versions are), you might be able to extract underlying documents, but a direct conversion to PDF is safest for compliance.
3. GNSS Antenna Exchange (Scientific)
Less commonly, this is an Antenna Exchange Format file used by the International GNSS Service (IGS) for calibrating satellite antennas. These are text-based data files best converted to TXT or CSV for analysis in spreadsheet software.
Convert.Guru analyzes your ATX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted GDBTABLE, AATX, ATX23EXPORT, GDBINDEXES, GDBTABLX, ATX22EXPORT, DOCM, ATX24EXPORT, AXT, DOC, ZIP, GDB and SPX files.
The ATX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ATX converter.
