Convert SBX to another file type
To convert SBX Project files to another format, you need ArcGIS Pro or other GIS software.
Convert a file to SBX
To convert other file formats to the "Spatial Index File" file type, you need software like ArcGIS Pro or a similar tool.
About SBX files
The .sbx file is primarily a spatial index file associated with an ESRI Shapefile. It works alongside SBN, SHP, SHX, and DBF files to optimize the rendering and querying of complex geographic features. It can also act as a screenplay project in StudioBinder or an educational block-coding project in ScratchX. You can open GIS .sbx files using QGIS or ArcGIS Pro. Users often try to convert these files because they are proprietary or tightly bound to a larger set of files. An .sbx file is useless on its own; if you share only the .sbx without the parent SHP and SHX files, the recipient cannot load the map data. Screenplay and ScratchX variants suffer from strict vendor lock-in, requiring specific accounts or outdated web platforms to access. Converting an .sbx directly is rarely the right approach for GIS data. Instead, the entire Shapefile bundle should be converted to GeoJSON or KML. For ScratchX, the underlying ZIP archive can be extracted to access the raw asset files. This file format is notoriously difficult to open or convert in isolation. Standard online converters fail because the GIS format relies heavily on external files, while the screenplay and database variants are closed, proprietary formats. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data, but our analyzer can help you understand what you have.
Convert.Guru analyzes your SBX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert SBX file to PDF, ZIP, RAR, 7Z, TAR, GZ, BZ2, XZ, LZMA, CAB, ACE or ARJ, you can use ArcGIS Pro or similar software from the "Spatial Data Indexing" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert XXE, 7Z, Z, PAK, LHA, DEB, UUE, TAR, LZH, ZIP, PKG or RAR files to SBX, try ArcGIS Pro or another comparable tool in the "Spatial Data Indexing" category.
The SBX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SBX converter.
