About SMZIP files
An .SMZIP file is a specialized archive package used by the open-source rhythm game StepMania. Functionally, it is a standard ZIP file renamed with a specific extension to trigger automatic installation within the game engine. These packages typically contain "Simfiles" (step charts in SM or SSC format), accompanying audio tracks (MP3, OGG), and background graphics (PNG, JPG).
The primary problem for users is that the operating system treats .SMZIP as a proprietary game file rather than a folder you can browse. Double-clicking it usually launches StepMania to install the content, rather than letting you see or extract the files inside. Users often need to "convert" these files to access the music for listening, extract background art, or manually edit the step charts without loading the full game.
The most practical solution is to treat the file as a ZIP archive. By renaming the extension from .smzip to zip, you can open it with any standard archiver like 7-Zip or Windows File Explorer. From there, you can extract the individual assets or repackage them for other rhythm game engines like Project OutFox.
Convert.Guru analyzes your SMZIP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The SMZIP Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SMZIP converter.
