About DDR files
The .ddr file extension serves three distinct proprietary functions in gaming, often causing confusion for users expecting standard media files.
1. Metin2 Anti-Cheat Replay (Most Common)
Primarily, this file is generated by the Metin2 MMORPG client (specifically the HackShield or anti-cheat subsystems). It functions as a gameplay log, recording player coordinates, packet data, and inputs to recreate a session for review.
The Friction: Users often try to open these with VLC Media Player or convert them directly to MP4 or AVI. This fails because the file contains no video frames - only mathematical instructions for the game engine to re-render the scene in real-time.
The Solution: To "convert" this to video, you must play the file within the Metin2 client's replay viewer and use screen recording software like OBS Studio to capture the playback.
2. Ashes of Creation Game Data
A secondary use is within the Ashes of Creation architecture, where .ddr files act as JSON-based data definitions. These control game logic, item stats, or UI elements. unlike the binary Metin2 files, these are often plain text.
The Solution: You can typically open these in Notepad++ or Visual Studio Code to view or edit the raw JSON structure. For web use, renaming the extension to JSON often makes them compatible with standard parsers.
3. Dance Dance Revolution / StepMania File
Historically, the extension has been associated with simfiles for StepMania or legacy Dance Dance Revolution simulators. These files contain step charts and timing data. Modern versions largely use SM or SSC files, so a .ddr file here likely indicates an obsolete or console-dumped format that requires conversion to a modern simfile format for use.
Convert.Guru analyzes your DDR file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert DDR file to BAK, BACKUP, OLD, TMP, TEMP, ARC, ZIP, TAR, GZ, 7Z, RAR or ISO, you can use Metin2 or similar software from the "Game Replay & Data Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert SNAPSHOT, OLD, IMG, RESTORE, ISO, COPY, VMDK, TMP, VHD, BAK, ARCHIVE or BACKUP files to DDR, try Metin2 or another comparable tool in the "Game Replay & Data Storage" category.
The DDR Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DDR converter.
