PWD files present a unique challenge because they usually belong to one of two mutually exclusive categories: proprietary engineering data or legacy text documents.

First, in the engineering sector, .PWD files are Power System Simulation cases created by PowerWorld Simulator. These contain binary data representing electrical grid power flows, rendering them unreadable by standard tools like Microsoft Excel. The main drawback here is proprietary lock-in; users cannot simply double-click to view the data without the expensive host software.

Second, .PWD serves as a legacy document format for Pocket Word (Windows CE) and SoftMaker TextMaker.
