About SETUP files

The .setup file is primarily an executable setup program used to install software on Linux and Unix operating systems. These files are typically compiled as Executable and Linkable Format (ELF) binaries. A secondary, rarer use is the Character Setup File utilized by CryENGINE, a game engine developed by Crytek.

The main disadvantage of a .setup file is its strict platform dependency. Linux executables will not run on Windows or macOS without a virtual machine or compatibility layer. Because they are compiled machine code, they are completely opaque. You cannot read them to see what changes they will make to your system. CryENGINE files also suffer from proprietary lock-in. They require a heavy, specialized game engine to open and often demand expensive hardware to fully utilize.

You generally do not convert a .setup file. Standard online converters fail to process them because they are compiled binaries, not standard documents or media formats. If the file is a self-extracting archive, your best option is to extract the internal payload to a .TAR.GZ or ZIP file instead of running the installer. For CryENGINE character files, exporting data to standard 3D formats like FBX or data formats like XML requires the original game engine software.

Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. While compiled executables and closed proprietary formats are difficult to parse, convert.guru can still identify the file format, inspect the file, and show text strings or internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded archive format, extraction or viewing may still be possible without running the dangerous executable code.

Convert.Guru analyzes your SETUP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted EXE, ISO, XLSX, MSI, MP4, ZIP, DAT, CGA, FPJ and CFT files.

The SETUP Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SETUP converter.
