About SETUP files

A .SETUP file is most frequently an ELF (Executable and Linkable Format) installer used on Linux and Unix systems to deploy software, games, or drivers. Unlike Windows EXE or MSI files, these are binary executables designed specifically for the Linux kernel and will not open on Windows or macOS without virtualization. Users often encounter these when downloading legacy Linux games (like those from Loki Software) or specialized driver packages. A common problem is that these files often lack the 'executable' permission flag by default after downloading, meaning they do nothing when double-clicked.

A secondary, rarer use (approx. 0.9%) is as a legacy Character Setup file for CryENGINE by Crytek. These files store character animation and inverse kinematics configurations. In modern versions of the engine, this data has been consolidated into CHRPARAMS files. Because these formats are either compiled binaries or deprecated proprietary configs, direct conversion to standard formats like DOCX or PDF is impossible. For Linux installers, the goal is 'conversion' to a running process via the terminal. For CryENGINE files, the best workflow is upgrading them within the CryENGINE SDK or viewing them as raw text if the structure permits.

Convert.Guru analyzes your SETUP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted EXE, ISO, XLSX, MSI, MP4, ZIP, DAT, CGA, FPJ and CFT files.

The SETUP Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SETUP converter.
