About SDI files

The .sdi extension is shared by two completely different file formats, often causing confusion.

  1. Microsoft System Deployment Image (Primary): This is a proprietary disk image format used by Microsoft Windows for booting operating systems directly from RAM (RAM booting) or network deployment (PXE). Unlike standard ISO or VHD files, an SDI file typically contains a Boot BLOB, a Load BLOB, and a Part BLOB, making it difficult to mount or edit without specific command-line tools like sdimgr.exe. Users often struggle to open these in modern virtualization software like VMware or VirtualBox, leading to a need to convert them to standard ISO or IMG formats for broader compatibility.
  2. MySQL Serialized Dictionary Information (Secondary): Introduced in MySQL 8.0, these are text-based files containing database table metadata formatted as JSON. They exist to provide a backup of the table schema even if the main .IBD files are corrupted. The 'friction' here is that the .sdi extension prevents users from realizing they can simply open these with any text editor. Users often convert these to JSON (by renaming) or PDF for schema documentation.

Convert.Guru analyzes your SDI file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted CAB, PDF, JPG, WMP, LOG, IP and TDI files.

The SDI Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SDI converter.
