About SDG files

The .SDG file extension represents a collision of three distinct digital ecosystems, often causing confusion for users trying to open them. Most commonly, it is a SmartDraw Graphic, a proprietary vector diagram created by SmartDraw. These files are excellent for business charts and floor plans but are proprietary lock-ins; you typically need a paid SmartDraw subscription to view or edit them, and they are not supported by standard web browsers.

Alternatively, in scientific and engineering fields, an SDG file is a Strater Project created by Golden Software for plotting geotechnical boreholes and stratigraphy. These are complex, data-heavy files that require specific, expensive industry software to render.

Finally, for users in Mexico, an SDG file is often a Digital Seal Certificate Request generated by the SAT (Servicio de Administración Tributaria). These are encrypted regulatory files meant for upload, not viewing, and trying to open them in Word or Acrobat will result in garbled text.

For the graphical formats (SmartDraw and Strater), the pragmatic solution is converting them to universal formats. Convert to PDF for sharing with clients who lack the software, PNG or WebP for embedding diagrams in web reports, or SVG to preserve vector scalability in other design tools. For Salesforce Sysdog or raw data variants, dragging the file to convert.guru can help identify if the internal structure is ZIP or JSON readable.

The SDG Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SDG converter.
