About OTX files

The .otx file extension represents two distinct but technical file types that often confuse users.

1. Game Texture Definition (Most Common)

Primarily, this is a Game Texture file generated by the Open Texture Extractor tool, widely used in the modding community for games like Grand Theft Auto V. These files act as texture dictionaries, defining how surface images (skins, vehicle wraps, environment textures) map onto 3D models.

The Problem: You cannot open these files in standard image viewers like Microsoft Photos or editors like Adobe Photoshop. They are proprietary containers holding metadata and raw texture data. To edit a game texture, you must first "convert" (export) the internal data into a standard raster format.

The Solution: Use Open Texture Extractor or the OpenIV toolkit to export the contents.

For Editing: Convert to PNG or DDS (DirectDraw Surface) to modify the graphics in Photoshop or GIMP.
For Storage: Keep as .OTX only if you are distributing a mod package.

2. OpenTX Model Data (RC Transmitters)

Secondly, .otx files serve as model setting backups for OpenTX firmware, used in Radio Control (RC) transmitters like the FrSky Taranis or RadioMaster TX16S.

The Problem: These are binary or XML-based settings files that determine channel mapping, flight modes, and mixer logic. They are not human-readable text files.

The Solution:

To Edit: Use OpenTX Companion to load the file, visualize the mixer settings, and simulate the model behavior on your PC.
To Convert: You generally do not convert these to other formats, but you can export specific model settings to CSV for documentation via the Companion software.
