The .scar extension primarily refers to a Scenari Archive, a package format used by the Scenari publishing chain for e-learning and structured documentation. Internally, these files are simply ZIP archives containing XML data, images, and resources. Users often struggle with these files when they lack the specific Scenari client (like Opale or Dokiel) and simply need to access the enclosed media or text. The practical workaround is to rename the file extension from .scar to zip, allowing immediate extraction with standard tools like 7-Zip or Windows Explorer.
A secondary but significant use (approx. 9%) is as a SCAR Script file used by Relic Entertainment games such as Company of Heroes and Dawn of War. SCAR stands for Scripting At Relic. These are plain text files written in Lua, used to control mission logic and AI behavior. Gamers and modders often need to convert or view these as TXT or LUA files to edit game scenarios.
