Users typically encounter these files when attempting to mod games, extract soundtracks, or fix "missing .big file" installation errors. Because standard utilities like Windows Explorer or 7-Zip cannot read the custom "BIG4" or "BIGF" headers, users face a "black box" scenario where content is locked away. A secondary, unrelated use of the extension is found in AIR Music Technology products (like Xpand!2 and Mini Grand), where the file acts as a Virtual Instrument container storing GBs of audio samples.
