About RTN files
The .RTN file extension is primarily a RED Thumbnail file generated by high-end RED Digital Cinema cameras (like the V-RAPTOR or KOMODO). These files serve as low-resolution preview images for the massive R3D raw video clips, allowing software like REDCINE-X PRO to quickly display visual content without decoding the full video stream. Users often deal with issues when they find these orphan files on hard drives and cannot open them with standard image viewers like Microsoft Photos or Apple Preview, leading to panic that they are missing video footage. In reality, the .RTN is just a sidecar helper file; the actual video resides in the accompanying R3D or MOV file.
However, the format is ambiguous. A significant minority of .RTN files are actually Device Diagnostic archives used by Android system tools. In this case, the file is simply a renamed ZIP container holding logs and XML data, which causes confusion when users try to "play" it as media. Industrial users may also encounter .RTN files as Measurement Routines created by QVI SmartScope systems for metrology. For RED thumbnails, the best conversion target is JPG or PNG for easy viewing. For Android diagnostics, the practical solution is often renaming the extension to ZIP to extract the contents.
Convert.Guru analyzes your RTN file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert RTN file to MID, CSV, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, INI, CFG, CONF, DAT or DB, you can use REDCINE-X PRO or similar software from the "Camera Video Thumbnail" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

The RTN Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our RTN converter.
