About R3D files
The .R3D file extension primarily denotes a REDCODE RAW video file captured by high-end cinema cameras from RED Digital Cinema. It can also represent structural analysis models created in RISA-3D. Video files are managed using REDCINE-X PRO, Premiere Pro, or DaVinci Resolve. The raw video format is heavily proprietary and utilizes Wavelet compression. It creates massive files (often exceeding hundreds of gigabytes per clip) that require powerful workstations to decode and edit in real-time. Native .R3D files are unsupported by standard media players and web browsers. They require heavy processing overhead just to view. To share or preview these files, conversion is mandatory. Convert to MP4 (H.264/H.265) for quick web delivery and client reviews. Convert to MOV (Apple ProRes) or MXF (DNxHR) for smooth proxy editing without hardware strain. Drag and drop your .R3D file to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software on convert.guru.

The R3D Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our R3D converter.
