About ROT files

The .ROT file extension is primarily a proprietary Tube CAD design file created and used by TRUMPF TruTops TubeCAD. It contains 3D geometry and machine-specific instructions for automated laser tube cutting machines. A secondary, rarer use of the .ROT extension is as a heavily compressed 3D graphics file for the classic video game Homeworld 2 by Sierra Entertainment.

The primary disadvantage of the .ROT format is its heavily closed ecosystem. TRUMPF software licenses are prohibitively expensive for casual users, and the files are effectively locked to their specific manufacturing environment. You cannot open a .ROT file in standard web browsers, nor can you import it natively into general-purpose 3D software like Blender or AutoCAD. Sharing these files with external clients or manufacturers who do not own TRUMPF machines creates immediate workflow bottlenecks.

To make the 3D data usable elsewhere, the best conversion targets are universal CAD formats like STEP, IGES, or DXF. However, converting a .ROT file to these standard formats will strip away the proprietary machine-level data - such as laser power settings, cutting speeds, and rotation parameters - leaving only the raw 3D geometry. For Homeworld 2 files, modders typically need specialized community tools to convert the graphics into OBJ or DAE files.

Because .ROT is a closed, proprietary format, standard online converters generally fail to process it. Often, only the original TRUMPF software can properly read or export the manufacturing data. However, convert.guru can still identify the file format, inspect the file, and show text or internal content. Just drag and drop your file to see what it is and convert it if an underlying or embedded format is supported.

Convert.Guru analyzes your ROT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted TXT, JPG, CF2, GSM and SEV files.

FAQ

If you want to convert ROT file to BASE64, HEX, BIN, ENC, CRYPT, AES, DES, RSA, PGP, GPG, ASC or KEY, you can use TRUMPF TruTops TubeCAD or similar software from the "Tube CAD Design" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

The ROT Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ROT converter.
