The .red file extension is notoriously fragmented, serving entirely different purposes depending on the software that created it. Most commonly, it functions as a window construction report file generated by Orgadata LogiKal. Under the hood, this specific variant is actually a standard ZIP archive containing proprietary project data. Alternatively, .red files act as source code for warrior programs in the classic Core War programming game (written in Redcode assembly), binary 3D meshes for CD Projekt REDengine, or CADViewer markup files by Tailor Made Software.
The massive disadvantage of the .red format is this exact ambiguity. Operating systems cannot reliably guess which program should open it. Furthermore, files like the LogiKal reports are locked behind expensive, niche industry subscriptions. If you simply want to view the contents without the native software, you are usually stuck relying on trial and error. If your file is a LogiKal report, converting or renaming it to ZIP allows you to extract and inspect the underlying data. For Core War files or Red programming language scripts, convert to TXT for universal text editing. For archiving REDengine 3D mesh data, extracting to OBJ provides standard cross-platform compatibility.
