About QPT files

A .QPT file is primarily a Print Layout Template created by QGIS, the leading open-source Geographic Information System. These files function as blueprints for map compositions, saving the arrangement of map frames, legends, scale bars, and text labels in an XML format.

Crucially, a QGIS .QPT file does not contain the actual map data (terrain, roads, boundaries). It only stores the visual definition of the page. If you try to open a .QPT file without the associated QGIS project (.QGS or .QGZ) and data layers, you will likely see empty frames or "Layer not found" errors. This is a common friction point when colleagues share a template expecting it to be a full map document.

Less frequently, a .QPT file may be a Project Template from QuarkXPress, a professional desktop publishing software. These are binary files used to initialize new brochures or magazines with consistent styling.
