Extract text from Code page files (CPG)
To convert CPG Code pages to another format, you need QGIS or other GIS software.
To convert other file formats to the "Shapefile Encoding Text File" file type, you need software like QGIS or a similar tool.
A .CPG file usually acts as a mandatory companion file in the ESRI Shapefile format ecosystem. It dictates the text encoding (such as UTF-8 or ISO-8859-1) applied to the DBF (database) component of a shapefile map. Without it, mapping software might display special characters incorrectly. This file is typically read automatically by GIS software such as QGIS or Esri ArcGIS. Another very common variation of the .CPG file is the Motorola Radio Codeplug, which stores frequency, channel, and zone programming configurations for Motorola two-way radios via the Motorola Customer Programming Software (CPS).
The main frustration with .CPG files is their ambiguity. Because the extension is shared by GIS text files, proprietary radio programming databases, graphic design plugins, and even old game campaign files, users often do not know what is inside their file. If it is a Motorola Codeplug, it requires highly specialized, expensive, and restrictive software to view or edit. If it is a CorelDRAW plugin, it is actually an executable disguised as a plugin, meaning it cannot be edited normally.
For GIS .CPG files, conversion is rarely needed since they only contain a few characters of text; however, you can easily convert them to TXT for reading. If you have a Motorola Codeplug .CPG file, you might want to extract the channel data to CSV or XML to migrate radio configurations or document your frequencies.
