Convert CPG to another file type
To convert your CPG file to another format, you need ESRI ArcGIS or other GIS software.
Convert a file to CPG
To convert other file formats to the "Shapefile Sidecar" file type, you need software like ESRI ArcGIS or a similar tool.
About CPG files
The .CPG file extension is a multi-format identifier that causes significant confusion due to its use in three distinct industries: Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Radio Telecommunications, and Digital Art.
Most commonly, a .CPG file is a small plain-text sidecar file used by ESRI ArcGIS and QGIS. Its sole purpose is to specify the character encoding (codepage) for the accompanying DBF database in a Shapefile set. Without this file, special characters in map attributes may appear as corrupted text (mojibake). These files are extremely small and often locked into the Shapefile format, which is not web-friendly.
Alternatively, a .CPG file may be a Motorola Codeplug file, a proprietary binary database used by Motorola Solutions Customer Programming Software (CPS) to configure frequency and channel settings on two-way radios. These are notoriously difficult to open without the specific licensed software version matching the radio firmware.
Finally, it can represent a page file within a Clip Studio Paint (formerly Manga Studio) project, containing raster and vector data for a single comic page. Users often struggle to share these files because they require the specific parent application to view.
Conversion Recommendations:
For GIS: You cannot convert a CPG in isolation. You must process the entire Shapefile set (.SHP, .SHX, .DBF, .CPG) together. Convert the set to GeoJSON or KML for web use, or CSV to extract the attribute data.
For Digital Art: Convert Clip Studio pages to PNG, JPG, or PDF to share artwork with clients who do not possess the software.
For Radios: While direct conversion is rare, enthusiasts often look to export configuration data to CSV or PDF for documentation purposes.
Convert.Guru analyzes your CPG file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert CPG file to PDF, KML, CSV, DWG, JPG, PNG, GIF, BMP, TIFF, TIF, WEBP or ICO, you can use ESRI ArcGIS or similar software from the "Shapefile Character Encoding Identifier" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert RAW, PNG, AI, NEF, PSB, DNG, SVG, GIF, EPS, JPG, ARW or PDF files to CPG, try ESRI ArcGIS or another comparable tool in the "Shapefile Character Encoding Identifier" category.
The CPG Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CPG converter.
