About QTP files

QTP files are proprietary configuration files created by legacy versions of Apple QuickTime. These files store user-defined preferences such as connection speed, playback volume, registration keys, and browser plugin settings.

A common source of frustration for users is discovering a .QTP file in an old backup and mistaking it for a media file (like MOV or QT) due to the similar naming convention. It is critical to understand that .QTP files contain no video or audio data. They are strictly small data files used by the software to remember your choices. Because the format is specific to older versions of QuickTime (typically QuickTime 7 and earlier), modern media players like VLC Media Player or the current QuickTime Player on macOS cannot open or utilize them. Attempting to play them results in error messages.

Since this is not a content file, you cannot convert it to MP4, AVI, or MP3. However, for archival or forensic purposes, you may need to view the configuration data. The best workflow is to convert the .QTP file to TXT (plain text) to inspect the hex or ASCII values inside.

Convert.Guru analyzes your QTP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted TPR, QPT, QRP, PICT, TDT and MOVIE files.
