Convert a file to PXO
To convert other file formats to the "Pixel Art Project File" file type, you need software like Pixelorama or a similar tool.
About PXO files
The .PXO file extension is most actively associated with Pixelorama, a popular open-source tool for creating pixel art and animated sprites. These files serve as the master project containers, storing critical editing data like multiple layers, animation frames, custom palettes, and undo history in a structured format (often JSON-based).
The main limitation for users is that .PXO is a proprietary working format. You cannot upload a .PXO file directly to a website, use it in a game engine like Unity, or share it on social media. It requires the specific editor to interpret the layer data. To make the artwork usable, you must convert the project into standard raster formats. For static sprites, PNG is the ideal target due to its lossless compression and transparency support. For animations, converting to GIF or a Sprite Sheet is necessary for implementation in game development workflows.
Alternatively, older files may be Music World projects from the discontinued J-Active suite. These are legacy audio composition files containing musical data rather than images. Due to the software's obsolescence, these files are notoriously difficult to open or convert without access to an archived version of the original program.
Convert.Guru analyzes your PXO file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The PXO Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PXO converter.
