About PISKEL files
A .piskel file is a proprietary project file created by the Piskel online pixel art and animated sprite editor. Under the hood, this file is formatted as JSON, storing metadata, layer information, frame data, and tool settings used during the creation of 2D pixel animations. The primary disadvantage of a .piskel file is that it is not an actual image format. You cannot open it natively in web browsers, standard image viewers, or social media platforms. It requires the original Piskel environment to render the raw data into a visible sprite sequence. To share your work, you must convert the .piskel file into standard raster formats. The most common conversion targets are GIF for loopable web animations, PNG for static spritesheets used in game engines, or a ZIP archive containing individual frame images. Because this is a complex project file and not a standard media file, standard online converters often fail to process it. Only the original software can properly read or export the structured data into a seamless animation. However, just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. Our platform can inspect the internal JSON code, and if our analysis detects supported embedded image data, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your PISKEL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The PISKEL Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PISKEL converter.
