About PISKEL files

A .PISKEL file is a proprietary project file created by Piskel, a popular open-source editor for pixel art and animated sprites. Under the hood, this file is actually a plain text document formatted in JSON, containing Base64-encoded image data, layer structures, frame timings, and color palettes.

Because .PISKEL is a project source file rather than a standard raster image, it poses significant compatibility challenges. You cannot open it directly in standard image viewers like Windows Photos, upload it to social media, or import it directly into game engines like Unity or Godot without preprocessing. To use your animation, you typically need to export it. For web display and sharing, the best target is GIF. For game development, converting to a PNG sprite sheet (where frames are tiled in a grid) is the industry standard. For archiving or editing in other software, converting the internal frame data to a ZIP of individual PNG files allows for migration to tools like Aseprite.

Convert.Guru analyzes your PISKEL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted PNG, PIXIL, GIF, JPG, ZIP, TSX, SPRITE, TXT, BIN, EXE, TORRENT, PDF and STL files.
