About PTG files

The .PTG extension primarily identifies a native painting project created in ArtRage by Ambient Design. These files function as complex containers for digital canvases, storing proprietary data on paint thickness, wetness, lighting, and individual layers to simulate natural media like oil and watercolor. Unlike standard JPG or PNG images, .PTG files are strictly proprietary; they cannot be opened by web browsers, operating system previewers, or even professional editors like Adobe Photoshop without conversion. This lock-in is a common source of problems when sharing work with clients or archiving projects, as the file is useless without the specific host software installed. To make the content accessible, users typically convert these projects to PNG or JPEG for web viewing (which flattens the image and loses texture depth) or to PSD for continued editing in other raster suites. Note that a smaller subset of .PTG files are 3D point cloud grids used by Leica Geosystems in Cyclone software, which are binary data files completely unrelated to image editing.

The PTG Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PTG converter.
