About PTG files

The .PTG file extension is predominantly an ArtRage Painting Project file developed by Ambient Design. These files store highly complex digital painting data, including multiple rasterized layers, blend modes, vector text, custom brushes, canvas textures, and simulated paint volume (thickness and wetness). While excellent for the creative process, .PTG is a closed, proprietary format. This presents a major disadvantage: the files are completely unreadable to web browsers, standard image viewers, and most third-party design software like Adobe Photoshop. Because the rendering engine relies on ArtRage's internal physics simulator for paint strokes, standard online converters routinely fail to process these files. They cannot translate the wet paint metadata into flat pixels. If you need to share your work, the best solution is to export the file directly from ArtRage to standard formats like PSD (to retain layers) or PNG and JPG for flat viewing. In a secondary context, .PTG files function as Point Cloud Grid files used by 3D laser scanning software such as Leica Geosystems and PointCab. These massive data files store spatial 3D coordinates from physical scans. Converting them requires specialized heavy-duty CAD software to export to universal formats like LAS or E57. Additionally, older systems use .PTG as a Gradebook launch configuration file for PowerSchool, triggering a Java application download. Since these are proprietary files, they are notoriously difficult to convert without the native software. However, you can just drag and drop your file onto convert.guru to identify the format, view its internal structure, and convert it if our analysis detects a supported embedded format.

The PTG Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PTG converter.
