About MD5MESH files
The .MD5MESH file is an ASCII text-based skeletal 3D model format originally developed by id Software for the id Tech 4 engine, most famously used in Doom 3. It defines the base 3D geometry, joint hierarchy (skeleton), and vertex weights. It does not contain animation data, which is typically stored in companion MD5ANIM files. While originally designed for the Doom 3 SDK, these files are often managed today using community plugins in Blender or Maya. Because it is a legacy, proprietary format tied to a specific era of game development, working with .MD5MESH files today is highly restrictive. The plain-text ASCII structure makes the file size unnecessarily large compared to modern binary formats. It is not natively supported by web browsers, operating systems, or modern game engines like Unreal Engine or Unity out of the box. You also cannot send these files directly to a 3D printer, as they prioritize skeletal rigging over solid volume. For modern game development or 3D editing, convert the file to FBX or GLTF. If you are building a web-based 3D viewer, convert to GLB. If you only need the static geometry without the skeleton, convert to an OBJ file. Drag and drop your file here to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing legacy software.

The MD5MESH Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MD5MESH converter.
