A .pov file is a text-based Scene Description Language (SDL) script used by the Persistence of Vision Raytracer (POV-Ray) to generate high-quality 3D images. Unlike standard 3D formats like OBJ or FBX that store polygonal meshes, a .pov file contains programming code that mathematically defines Constructive Solid Geometry (CSG), lighting, textures, and atmospheric effects.
Because .pov files are essentially source code, they cannot be viewed as images or 3D models in standard software like Adobe Photoshop or Blender without rendering. Users often struggle with this format because viewing the content requires installing and running the POV-Ray engine, which relies on command-line configuration rather than a graphical interface. To make the file usable, it is typically rendered (converted) into a standard raster image like PNG, JPG, or TIFF for web and print use.
