An .FRW file is primarily a 2D drawing fragment created by KOMPAS-3D, a popular Computer-Aided Design (CAD) system developed by ASCON. Engineers and drafters use these files to store reusable 2D vector parts, schematic symbols, and parametric sketches for larger mechanical assemblies.
While highly useful within the ASCON ecosystem, the .FRW format poses severe limitations for external collaboration. It is a closed, proprietary file type. Standard web browsers cannot preview it, and industry-standard CAD software like AutoCAD cannot open it natively. Users without an expensive KOMPAS-3D license are completely locked out of the vector data.
To share these designs with manufacturers or colleagues, you must convert the .FRW file to universal vector formats like DWG, DXF, or PDF. Keep in mind that converting away from the native ASCON format will strip away proprietary parametric constraints, leaving you with static geometry.
Converting .FRW files online is notoriously difficult because the format relies on undocumented binary structures. Modern .FRW files are structurally complex ZIP containers holding embedded model data, and most generic online converters fail to parse this specialized geometry.
