About PFB files

The .PFB (Printer Font Binary) file is a legacy font format developed by Adobe for PostScript Type 1 fonts. It stores the mathematical vector data that draws each glyph in the typeface. Traditionally, a .PFB file is useless on its own; it requires a matching PFM (Printer Font Metrics) file to tell the operating system about the character spacing and kerning.

The biggest disadvantage of the .PFB format today is strict obsolescence. As of January 2023, Adobe dropped all support for Type 1 fonts across modern Adobe Creative Cloud software, including Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign. If you try to open a decades-old project using a .PFB font, the text will flag as missing or default to a system font. Furthermore, no modern web browser supports rendering .PFB files natively.

To rescue legacy typography, you must convert these files. For print and professional desktop editing, convert to OTF (OpenType). For standard office use across Windows and macOS, convert to TTF (TrueType). For web embedding, convert to WOFF or WOFF2.

In completely unrelated scenarios, a .PFB file can also be a Positec Firmware Bundle. These files are structurally identical to standard ZIP archives and are used to update the firmware on robotic lawnmowers like those from Positec Worx. If you have this file type, you can rename the extension to ZIP to inspect its contents.
