About PFB files

The .PFB (Printer Font Binary) file is a legacy font format developed by Adobe as part of the PostScript Type 1 standard. It contains the binary data for glyph outlines, essential for rendering the font shape, and was historically paired with a PFM (Printer Font Metrics) file which held spacing data. While standard in the 90s, the .PFB format faces significant hurdles today: Adobe officially ended support for Type 1 fonts in January 2023 across Creative Cloud apps like Photoshop and InDesign, and modern operating systems (Windows 11, macOS Sonoma) often refuse to install or display them. Furthermore, they are not cross-platform compatible and lack the advanced typographic features of modern OpenType fonts.

To salvage these assets for modern design workflows, users should convert .PFB files to OTF (OpenType) or TTF (TrueType). These formats are universally supported on modern desktops and design software. for web usage, converting to WOFF or WOFF2 is essential, as browsers do not render PostScript binaries.

Note: A secondary use of the .PFB extension is for firmware updates on Positec Worx Landroid robotic mowers. These are often just renamed ZIP archives containing the actual firmware binary (BIN). Converting these files is generally not recommended if you intend to update the hardware, but renaming them to ZIP allows you to inspect the contents.
