About F files
The .f file extension has multiple distinct uses depending on your system environment. Most commonly in modern desktop use, it functions as a file management profile archive for FenrirFS, a Japanese file organization utility. Internally, these files are standard ZIP containers storing profile configuration and database data. Alternatively, in software development and scientific computing, .f represents plain text Fortran Source Code, one of the oldest high-level programming languages. Older UNIX systems also utilized the .f extension for legacy Freeze Compressed Files. Dealing with .f files is frustrating because operating systems do not know which application to launch by default. FenrirFS archives are strictly proprietary and locked to their host software, while obsolete Freeze archives require ancient UNIX command-line tools to extract. Fortran source files require dedicated code editors, which casual users do not have installed. To resolve these issues, you need format conversion. For FenrirFS archives, extracting or converting to a standard ZIP allows you to access the raw data. For Fortran code, converting to TXT or MD ensures the code is universally readable on any device. For permanent archiving, convert the source code to .PDF/A.

The F Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our F converter.
