About F files

The .f file extension represents a diverse set of legacy and proprietary formats, most commonly serving as Fortran Source Code or a FenrirFS Profile Archive.

For developers and scientists, a .f file contains source code written in Fortran 77 (fixed format), a language pivotal in high-performance computing. The primary challenge is that these files are plain text but require a compiler like GNU Fortran to execute. Users typically convert these to TXT for easier viewing in standard editors or compile them into executable binaries.

Alternatively, users of the file management tool FenrirFS encounter .f files as profile archives. These are internally ZIP containers storing configuration data. The limitation here is proprietary lock-in; you cannot view the contents without the specific software. A third, rarer type is the Freeze Compressed File, a legacy Unix archive replaced by Gzip, which modern systems often struggle to decompress without specialized command-line tools.

Convert.Guru analyzes your F file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted F77, FOR, BIN, FP, CWL, XC, C, K and R files.

The F Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our F converter.
