Extract text from Backup files (PCV)

To convert other file formats to the "Application Profile Backup" file type, you need software like MozBackup or a similar tool.
The .PCV file extension is most widely known as a MozBackup Profile Backup file. It stores user profiles, emails, bookmarks, and settings for Mozilla Thunderbird and Firefox. Under the hood, these files are simply standard ZIP archives renamed to .PCV.
Users also encounter .PCV files as Picocrypt Encrypted Files created by the open-source Picocrypt utility, or as Computer Migration Data Files used by Laplink PCmover to transfer application data between computers.
These formats present distinct, real-world challenges. MozBackup is a dead, discontinued project, meaning users frequently struggle to restore old backups on modern operating systems. Picocrypt files require the exact original password to be decrypted, rendering them completely inaccessible to standard converters. Laplink PCmover files are heavily proprietary and locked to specific migration licenses, offering no standard export functionality.
The best conversion target for a MozBackup .PCV file is a standard ZIP archive. By extracting the archive, you can manually access your underlying MBOX email files and address books. For Picocrypt and PCmover files, direct conversion is impossible without the original software and credentials.
Because of these mixed uses and proprietary locks, .PCV files are notoriously difficult to open or convert. Emphasize that often only the original software can properly read or export the data. Standard online converters fail entirely because they do not know how to handle encrypted blobs or proprietary migration databases.
